Peter in City’s away strip at Derby 21-08-1974

CCFPA is sorry to hear the news that former Sky Blue full back Peter Hindley has just passed away aged 76. He had suffered with dementia in recent years.

Born in Worksop, North Nottinghamshire, Peter came from footballing background. His father Frank played League football for both Nottingham Forest (1937) and Brighton either side of the Second World War (1939-46). The full back also started his professional career with the Forest coming up through the ranks from their juniors and turning pro in June 1961.  He spent 13 seasons at the City ground becoming a regular in Divisions 1 and 2 and picking up England U23 honours on the way (1 cap).

Peter hindley in the Sky Blue

By the time he arrived at Highfield Road in February 1974 for £35k he had clocked up 366 league games for the Garibaldi Reds netting 10 times. It was hoped he could once more step up to top flight football but in his debut game in City’s defence at St James Park on February 9th 1974 the Sky Blues got thumped 5-1 by Newcastle United! He ended up playing only nine times in his first Sky Blue season. In 1974-75 he built up a solid central defensive partnership with Larry Lloyd and appeared 23 times. The re-appearance from injury of (now CCFPA member) Alan Dugdale saw Peter used much less as he dropped into the reserves and made his lone (swansong) first team outing in 1975-76 before moving to Peterborough United in July 1976.

At the Posh Hindley was their regular right-back and a mainstay in the XI who conceded a club record low of 33 goals in 46 games in the 1977-78 Division Three season and just missed out on goal difference being promoted to Division Two for their first time ever. Apparently nicknamed ‘The Tank’ at the London Road club he made 129 appearances in all competitions for the Posh getting his only goal in 1977 in a 3-1 win over local rivals Northampton Town.

On hanging up his boots in 1979 he owned and raced greyhounds (they sometimes ran around the London Road pitch)! Peter remained living in Bretton, Northamptonshire and had been a painter and decorator.

CCFPA sends its condolences to Peter’s family and friends at their loss!
