January 16th 1913 (FAC R1 replay) Coventry City 1-2 Manchester Utd (attendance 20042)

Manchester Utd (FAC1r) (h) 16-01-1913

This is the only known image of a programme front from this fair-to-middling season in the Southern League. City were drawn against Manchester United again (after their 2nd round 1-5 home defeat the previous season. This time the Bantams did much better holding the Division 1 outfit 1-1 at Old Trafford the previous Saturday (Joe Mitchell got our goal). This replay curiously on a Thursday saw Billy Meredith’s United take the lead just before half-time (from centre half Charlie Roberts) before Harry ‘Tickle’ Parkes equalised amid much excitement with 6 minutes to go. However the more powerful side managed to sneak the victory on 87 minutes with a goal from George Anderson. The crowd produced a record gate, the first over 20000 in the City’s Highfield Road history.

If anyone knows the whereabouts of this programme or any other from this season we would be eager to hear from you!

March 13th 1920 Coventry City 1-1 Stockport County (attendance c.12000)

Stockport (h) 13-3-1920 -p1Stockport (h) 13-3-1920 -p2 teamsCity had a torrid introduction to the English League finishing 20th in Division Two and not winning their first game until their 20th attempt on Christmas Day 1919. Relegation was staved off by a last day victory (which was a couple of seasons later proved to have been fixed)! The ‘Bantams’ or ‘Citizens’ were on their 3rd Secretary Manager when they made this home draw in March a week after achieving the same score in the away fixture at Stockport. Centre forward Dick Parker equalised four minutes from the end of the game following a 70th minute County opener.

This programme designed for life amongst the big boys was a 4 page newspaper style affair costing tuppence with plenty of adverts and statistics but very little comment.
