Maurice in the Sky Blue

Readers will be pleased to know that a full 2,000 word appreciation by CCFC’s Official Historian (and CCFPA Chairman) Jim Brown of the life and career of veteran gritty former Sky Blue central defender Maurice Setters is now available on this site.

We earlier reported that Maurice passed away aged 83 just over a week ago in Doncaster and had been a sufferer of Alzheimers for several years. Sadly, ill health in his later years prevented any appearance at our Association reunions in past seasons.

Many older fans would agree that if one player did more than any other to keep us up in City’s inaugural season in the top flight following Jimmy Hill’s team achieving promotion to Division One in 1967 it was Maurice.

Maurice in Sky Blue action

He was brought to Highfield Road by Sky Blue ‘gaffer’ Noel Cantwell (a former playing colleague at Manchester United) from Stoke City in November 1967 to fill the big gap in City’s defence left by the enforced absence of (future fellow CCFPA member) George Curtis with a broken leg.  In three seasons (1967-70) Maurice pulled on the Sky Blue shirt 59 times and netted three times before moving to Charlton Athletic to see out his career.

Jim’s appreciation includes reminiscences of Maurice by other CCFPA members who played with the uncompromising defender including (now CCFPA committee member) Dietmar Bruck, Chris Cattlin, Roy Barry and CCFC physio Norman Pilgrim.

To access Jim’s tribute on this site just click on the ‘Players’ tab above and select the ‘Gone But Not Forgotten‘ option.

There you will find, not just an appreciation of Maurice, but a tribute to every one of our FP members and other CCFC staff who have passed away since the formation of the Association in December 2006.
