Tony Waiters in his playing days

The Association was very sad to hear of the passing this week age 83 of Tony Waiters who was briefly Director of Coaching at CCFC from December 1971 under Noel Cantwell.

An England ‘keeper (with five caps in 1964) Tony had started out in non-league football with Bishop Auckland and Macclesfield Town before joining Blackpool.

He eventually moved to Burnley after 250 games with the Tangerines as a coach but came out of retirement to play for them age 33 for 42 more games. Leaving Highfield Road in 1972, resigning after Cantwell’s dismissal, he then became Plymouth Argyle’s boss. Tony then moved to Canada to manage, with some success, the Vancouver Whitecaps initially and then he managed the National team, further building a reputation as a visionary coach through his company ‘World Of Soccer’.

Our sincere condolences go to Tony’s family and close friends.
