Hill, P. (Peter) 1957-58(3)

Peter in 1957-58

In what has been a particularly sad week for all those that have fond memories of the Jimmy Hill era in the 1960s, and following the deaths in the last few days of former Sky Blue forward (from 1962-66) Ken Hale and former sixties CCFC Club Secretary Alan Leather we, unfortunately, have to report the passing of yet another important sporting figure of the same era.

CCFPA is very sorry to learn about the reported death earlier today in his eighties of Peter Hill, a loyal CCFC stalwart over more than three decades.  He had been in poor health for a while.

As a player the dimunitive winger bridged the Bantams and Sky Blue eras. Starting out at Rutland United, the Derbyshire born Peter was taken onto the CCFC groundstaff in 1947 from feeder club Modern Machine Tools. Turning professional in 1948 Peter made his debut in February 1949 at Sheffield Wednesday and eventually made 303 appearances and scored 77 goals for the club before becoming a junior coach at the club and then CCFC trainer in the Jimmy Hill era between 1962-67. After working in local industry for the next two decades he became the club’s kit manager from 1987 until he finally retired.

Peter was a longstanding Association member but his visits to see us in recent years were limited due to his health. In 2011 two of our then CCFPA committee members (the late Bob Bromage & Jim Cox) visited him and his wife Barbara at thir home and were pleased to present him (pictured) with an Association tie and his CCFPA memento badge from the 50th Anniversary of the Division 4 promotion season in 1958-59.

A longer appreciation of Peter’s career and influential contribution to club and city by official club historian and CCFPA chairman Jim Brown will appear here in due course. When we hear of any funeral arrangements we will, of course, pass them on as there will, no doubt, be many in the Sky Blue family that will wish to pay their respects.

The Association sends sincere condoleneces to Peter’s family and friends
