Ady, Peter & Walter Metcalf Tied Together

Congratulations to Sky Blue Supporter Peter Metcalf who celebrated his 76th birthday recently and was delighted to receive a surprise  from his son Adrian. Ady made an ‘out of the Sky Blue’ presentation to his father, a CCFPA official tie, which ‘Ady’ had bought for him (pictured).

The CCFPA connection is strong for both men since Ady became an Honorary Associate member of the Association earlier this year after contacting the Association about his grandfather, Peter’s dad, Walter Metcalf who had been a Coventry City player in the 1930s. Ady has loaned CCFPA some of Walter’s playing memorabilia which we have copied for posterity (see a later news item). Three generations of Metcalf’s are now ‘tied’ to CCFPA!

A left back, Walter was born in 1910, and started his football career at non league Scarborough in 1931, before being snapped up the following year by Division 1 Sunderland only just after Walter had turned pro with the non league outfit and after only 6 Midland League games for them. Although he didn’t make the Rokerites first team Brentford made a move for the promising young player in 1934 and he made seven first team games for the Bees before Harry Storer signed him for the Bantams in summer 1937.

Walter stayed at Highfield Road until he retired in 1946 and wartime profoundly affected his career. Even then he played 76 Division Two games for CCFC (with a solitary goal) plus an appearance in the aborted 1939-40 season. Walter also turned out for the Bantams well over 130 times in wartime fixtures as well as guesting for Forest and Northampton. When he hung up his boots Walter became a prison officer in Malaysia for a decade and a half before returning to his native Scarborough where he sadly passed away in 1981 aged 70.

Though not yet a CCFPA member Peter has since tried on his new Association tie and is well pleased with it. If you would like one (exactly the same as we present to all our former player members) you can purchase one for £10 (plus £2 p&p). If you are already an Associate member we offer £2 discount on this price. Either way please email Mike Young, CCFPA Membership Secretary on m.young9@ntlworld.com to discuss payment method.
