CCFC’s special matchday featuring six Legends in attendance

Legends Day 2024 in Coventry, just like all of our previous major annual Former Player reunions, has always proved a magnet for the local media anxious to not only report on the Sky Blues game that day but also to meet and interview our returning heroes. The Association and the Club (certainly in the last seven years since Mark Robins took the managerial helm) are typically on very good terms with national and especially the local media and open to good communications as the journalists cover the Sky Blues exploits. This was particulalry evidenced in the club’s recent wonderful F.A.Cup run all the way to the Semi-Finals with, for example, BBC CWR’s Vic Minnett sharing with CCFPA the agony and ecstasy of the recent Manchester United tussle.

For many years BBC CWR used CCFPA’s matchday FP ‘special guest’ as their guest commentator with the likes of Geoff Foster, Martin Winch and Clive Eakin at each and every Sky Blue home game until our member, the Sky Blues’ legendary ‘keeper Steve Ogrizovic took up the job permanently both home and away!

For this years LD24 both club and Association try hard to produce a complementary match-day programme which celebrates the return of former Sky Blue heroes in the context of club history. CCFC’s excellent matchday magazine PUSB continued this tradition last Saturday with editor Mark Hornby, taking up the suggestion of CCFPA’s Mike Young, to feature on the front cover six different club legends from six different decades.

There are pictures of Dietmar Bruck (1960s), Ian Wallace (1970s), Micky Gynn (1980s), Richard Shaw (1990s), David Thompson (2000s) and Frank Nouble (2010s) on the special front cover of Issue 26 of  CCFC’s match programme.

All are ever popular with Sky Blue fans and their exploits retain a special place in the hearts of the Sky Blue family.

All were due to attend LD24, Richard, David and Frank for their first ever Legends Day experience!

You can find pictures of all six in previous and futre posts about LD24 on this site!

Rob with Oggy & Clive Eakin in CBS Press Box

BBC CWR’s Rob Gurney was given a mission to track down at least each member of the sextet at the CBS Arena to do an in depth interview with each ex Sky Blue hero to be broadcast on subsequent days on BBC Coventry and Warwickshire (where you can find them via BBC  iPlayer)!

Rob also interviewed other ‘Legends’ present, like Barry Powell, He also wanted to get a fully autographed programme. He succeded in both as the accompanying images testify! Well done Rob!

Thanks to Rob and CCFPA’s Andy Scaysbrook and Steve Dorrington for the images
