Matchday Memories: On This Day 1984 – Bobby’s Boys Draw ‘Must Win’ Hatters’ Match

Gould R the ‘gaffer’

On this day (May 5th) in 1984 Sky Blue manager, former centre-forward (and now CCFPA member) Bobby Gould extracted an important point from a Division One game at Highfield Road. Not for the first time the club definitely had relegation jitters having shipped a dozen goals in their last two outings, 4-1 at Manchester United‘s Old Trafford and an embarrassing 8-2 reverse to Southampton at the Dell a week previously, CCFC’s biggest defeat since 1930.

Today’s match against mid table Luton Town had become a ‘must win’ but the 2-2 draw was better than nothing with only a probably fruitless visit to Anfield and a home finish against the Canaries to come. City had some grounds for confidence having defeated the Hatters 4-2 at Kenilworth Road in early December in a game remembered by an unfortunate own goal from our inexperienced young left back Stuart Pearce!

Nicky Platnauer in the Sky Blue

David Pleat‘s Hatters had former Sky Blue ‘keeper (the late) Les Sealey, CCFPA President Kirk Stephens and former City caretaker manager Frankie Bunn in their side on this day! Though the Sky Blues had the encouragement of a fourth minute lead from Nicky Platnauer, which lasted beyond half-time, the Sky Blues point was only achieved late on as they were forced to come from behind. City were in real trouble when the Hatters scored twice, first from Raddy Antic, just after the hour mark, direct from a free kick. The Hatters’ goal tally was then doubled on 75 minutes thanks to a strike from Mark Stein.

Terry in the Sky Blue

City’s saviour today was our diminutive striker (and now CCFPA member) Terry Gibson who must have been doubly pleased on 79 minutes when he grabbed the equaliser because he hadn’t netted in his last six games (he finished the Sky Blues’ ‘golden boot’ this season with nineteen goals). Nicky was second top with only six goals!

The City fans in the poor 9,647 crowd present at Highfield Road must have felt a degree of relief but still some trepidation that safety was nowhere near assured with this result.

For the record the two teams lined up as follows (current CCFPA members underlined):-

Kirk in the Sky Blue

Sky Blues:

Perry Suckling, Ian Butterworth, Stuart Pearce, Gerry Daly, Sam Allardyce, Steve Jacobs, Dave Bennett, Ashley Grimes (sub. Micky Gynn), Mick Ferguson, Terry Gibson and Nicky Platnauer.   ‘Benno’, of course, is Kirk’s fellow CCFPA committee member today!

Luton Town:
Les Sealey, Kirk Stephens, Mitchell Thomas, Brian Horton, Clive Goodyear, Mal Donaghy, Garry Parker, Brian Stein, Paul Walsh, Frankie Bunn and Raddy Antic                   Referee:- R.Bridges

Wayne Turner who played for the Sky Blues in 1985-86 was also on the Hatters books this season.

CCFC 1983-84

City duly lost their game at Anfield by five clear goals to the eventual Division One Champions Liverpool (taking the title by three points from Southampton). The Sky Blues, however, won their last game at home to Norwich City 2-1 with a goal from CCFPA committee member Dave Bennett and one from returning loanee from Birmingham City Mick Ferguson (now a CCFPA member) which was enough to save City in nineteenth and relegate his current club two points adrift.

Notts. County (21st) and Wolverhampton Wanderers (bottom) also went down on a bad day for Midlands clubs!

Thanks to CCFPA’s Mike Young for sourcing the images.
