Matchday Memories: On This Day 1987 – Sky Blue Stalemate Sees Foxes’ Filbert Street Fears Fester!
On this day (4th May) in 1987 were in the middle of a packed schedule of Division One games (five in ten days) mainly caused by a brilliant F.A.Cup run which would see them at Wembley for the first time ever in a dozen days time. Having beaten Watford 3-2 at Vicarage Road at the end of last month and Liverpool by the only goal at Highfield Road two days previously the Sky Blues team, co-managed by George Curtis and Chief Coach John Sillett (both long time CCFPA members before their quite recent deaths), made the trip down the M69 to meet Leicester City at Filbert Street. The result was a 1-1 draw, exactly the same score as the Sky Blues achieved in their remaining pair of league games that season, both at home, to Manchester United and Southampton.
City showed little mercy to their relegation haunted East Midlands neighbours though, to be fair, the Sky Blues had to defend skillfully for significant periods of the game. There was no score at half-time and it began to look as if both defences would have their day. However, on 74 minutes nippy inside forward Micky Gynn pounced on a Russell Osman error to give the travelling Sky Blue Army in the 14,903 crowd something to shout about. However, only ten minutes were to elapse before the Foxes’ Paul Ramsey was able to equalise from close range. Honours even but the draw left the Foxes on the brink of the drop.
The Foxes put out the following side:-
The Sky Blues finished a creditable tenth with 63 points. A very good season was capped by the “Boys of ’87” bringing the F.A.Cup back to Coventry after that stirring extra time Wembley victory over the ‘Spurs!
At the end of the season Liverpool had to accept, through gritted teeth, that they were runners up by fully nine points to Merseyside rivals and Champions Everton.
