Matchday Memories: On This Day 1996 – See Snowy’s Sublime Strike Sort Sky Blue’s Reds Success!
On this day (6th April) in 1996 Big Ron’s Sky Blues overcame the mighty Liverpool with a sublime piece of acrobatic aerial finishing by CCFPA member Noel Whelan, a goal made by the ‘Bullet from Bulawayo’, Sky Blue star Peter Ndlovu (a recent CCFPA recruit -our 300th)! A great pic of ‘Snowy’ scoring via his telescopic right leg can be seen below right. Noel is back in Coventry today in 2024 as our ‘special guest’ watching the Sky Blues play home-town club Leeds United at the CBS Arena in the Championship.
‘Snowy’ scored the only goal at Highfield Road in the eighteenth minute to get the Sky Blues their first victory in nearly three months and kick off yet another ‘great escape’. There were 23,037 present at the home of CCFC to see a fully committed performance from the Sky Blues. They had also come away from Anfield with a point the previous October in a goalless draw.
The Merseysiders were title contenders and, in fact, they finished third behind Newcastle United and champs Manchester United. The game was marred by the ‘Pool’s Steve Harkness breaking his leg in a challenge on the Sky Blues’ John Salako (also now a CCFPA member).
Thanks to former Association committee member Dean Nelson can relive Noel’s piece of football athleticism again by clicking on the link or picture below:-
Big Ron Atkinson‘s Sky Blues that day comprised:-
Steve Ogrizovic, Ally Pickering, Brian Borrows (sub. John Salako), Kevin Richardson, Liam Daish, David Busst, Paul Telfer, Paul D. Williams, Dion Dublin, Noel Whelan and Peter Ndlovu (sub. Eoin Jess)
We are delighted to say that the ‘gaffer’ and all his players above (except Kevin) went on to join this Association!
Former Sky Blue defender Phil Babb was on Liverpool’s books at the time.
For the record, the Sky Blues stayed up in 1995-96 in sixteenth spot thanks to better goal stats than relegated Manchester City and Southampton who also stayed up (all on the same 38 points). Queens Park Rangers and bottom club Bolton Wanderers also took the drop.
Manchester United took the title by four points from Newcastle United.
