Micky in 1986-87

Don’t forget that CCFPA member and Sky Blue 1987 F.A.Cup winning hero Micky Gynn will be our ‘special guest’ for tomorrow afternoon’s important Championship clash at the CBS Arena between the Sky Blues and Cardiff City.  Like all Sky Blues fans he will be looking to the Sky Blues to get more League points in the bag to keep their play-off aspirations alive following that excellent 3-1 win at Huddersfield Town on Good Friday!

Look out for Micky, who attends nearly all CCFC home games, before the game in the main stand supporters lounges where he and fellow CCFPA member (robust defender, now club host) Brian ‘Harry’ Roberts will be quizzing our diminutive and skilful former forward in his usual jocular way! No doubt he will have time for a quick chat with some other CCFC Former Players we expect to be at the game. These currently include (another 1987 F.A.Cup winning colleague) Dave Bennett as well as

William Edjennguèlè, Stuart Giddings, Jimmy Holmes, Peter Hormantschuk, Kirk Stephens and Graham Walker

After the game is over Micky will, no doubt, join CCFPA’s Billy Bell on stage in Lady Gs for some more fun and games (including the mass Sky Blue supporters choir singing the club’s anthem). No doubt another of Micky’s fellow ‘Boys of ‘87’ Steve Ogrizovic (another CCFPA member) will be in the Press Box as part of the BBC CWR commentary team – so if you really can’t get to the game in person, why not tune in?

Born in Peterborough on 19th August 1961 Micky started out at ‘the Posh’, his hometown club, in 1979. There he poached 39 goals from his total of 188 first team outings albeit mostly in the bottom division of English league football. Four years later, the Sky Blues snapped him up for £60k confident he could flourish at the top level. In over a decade with CCFC Micky accumulated 290 appearances netting 45 times in all games – and, of course, as said earlier, was a key member of the Sky Blues team that lifted the F.A.Cup at Wembley in May 1987.

In May 1993, Micky left Highfield Road for Stoke City where he failed to net in 30 appearances. After a brief attachment to Mansfield Town and a spell at Hamrun (Malta) in 1995 Micky played non-league football with the likes of Kettering Town (1995); King’s Lynn; Stamford Town; Hednesford Town; Corby Town (1997); Stafford Rangers (1998) and Warboys Town (1998).

Hanging up his boots in 1998 he became a postie in the Coventry area and also now can often be seen at CCFC home games in the Press Box working for the Press Association as a match summariser.  In 2005, Micky’s testimonial at Highfield Road was the penultimate game played at the beloved stadium before the club’s move to the Ricoh.

Micky regularly supports CCFPA events like Legends Days, Golf Days and sometimes still keeps his feet in occasionally playing for the Sky Blues Legends XI in charity fixtures.

CCFPA committee members Mike Young and Jim Brown (Association chairman) will also have their usual contributions in the club’s excellent match-day magazine, PUSB. Let’s hope everyone attending the Easter Monday game with Micky will see a Sky Blue victory!

Play Up Sky Blues
