Brian Alderson

On this day (8th March) in 1975 (now CCFPA member) Gordon Milne took his Sky Blues to visit Luton Town in Division One and came away with both points!  They also completed the double over the ‘Hatters’ (one of only two achieved that season). Milne’s men had beaten them earlier in the season (in late September) at Highfield Road by two clear goals, scored in the first half by Colin Stein (eight minutes) and David Cross six minutes before the break.

Alan Green

On this March day City managed to kick their way through the mud and puddles and achieved their victory through a first half brace from the late Brian Alderson (9 & 25 minutes) and a solo from diminutive inside forward Alan Green on 79 minutes.

A crowd of 14,423 at Kenilworth Road saw the away side achieve a comfortable 3-1 victory which left the Hatters in dire relegation trouble.

John Aston got the Hatters’ consolation goal on 55 minutes and, curiously, the Luton team played with two Ryans (John & Jimmy) and two Futchers (twins Paul & Ron).

Neil Ramsbottom, Graham Oakey, Chris Cattlin, Les Cartwright, John Craven*, Alan Dugdale (sub. Jim Holmes), Willie Carr, Brian Alderson*, Mick Ferguson, Alan Green and Tommy Hutchison.

*Sadly, John and Brian have since passed away and ‘Gone to Sky Blue Heaven’.

Harry Haslam‘s Hatters team lined up as follows:-

The Hatters were indeed relegated at the end of the 1974-75 season in twentieth place along with Chelsea and bottom club Carlisle United. The Sky Blues finished in a relatively comfortable fourteenth spot in the top division.

Derby County took the Division One title by a couple of points from Liverpool and third place Ipswich Town.
