Members News: ‘Benno’ Sees Sky Blues Cup Cruise Past Oxford (Hit For Six)!!
Benno and ‘Harry’ share a Q&A laugh with a CCFC current squad member
On a bright sunny day yesterday at the CBS Arena the Sky Blues kicked off their F.A.Cup campaign with a stirring 6-2 victory over Oxford United. There to watch proceedings as our ‘special guest’ for the game was our 1987 F.A.Cup (winning and scoring) hero Dave Bennett – who just happens also to be a longstanding CCFPA committee member)! ‘Benno’ brought his usual good humour and good luck to the Sky Blues who, avoiding a potential banana skin, cruised past their League One opponents. Though a there was an expectation of a win ‘Benno’ couldn’t have predicted City’s goal glut prior to kick-off when he toured the CBS Arena supporters lounges with great mate CCFC’s former defender (a CCFPA member) and club match-day host Brian ‘Harry’ Roberts.

There was a goal feast from all over the Sky Blue squad as Joel Latibeaudiere started the scoring spree after only 8 minutes. After a shock equaliser from Mark Harris just two minutes later, Ben Sheaf restored our lead with the third goal in as many minutes and a terrific strike from Kasey Palmer after 17 minutes gave us a 3-1 advantage at half-time. The popular ‘Benno’ went down to the pitch for a videoed interview at the break and was given a wonderful reception from the 18,000 CBS crowd who had been warmed up by reminders on the Arena’s big screen of the exploits of the ‘Boys of 87’.
The current Sky Blues produced more of their own memories in the second half as an audacious penalty from Callum O’Hare and a late cameo brace from substitute Matty Godden responded to a second Oxford goal from Tyler Goodrham. The final scoreline, involving eight goals, was a footballing feast appreciated by all and there were some happy fans who proceeded down into the G-Casino’s Lady Gs Lounge to watch a practised ‘Benno’ and Billy Bell double act from the stage.
