Matchday Memories: On This Day 2015 – See Sky Blue Loanee Trio Take Tykes To Task

Manager Mowbray

On this Tuesday night (November 3rd) in 2015 Sky Blues were heading towards the top of the League One table under manager Tony Mowbray and found enough to beat Barnsley by the odd goal in seven in an exciting match at the Ricoh.

City’s 4-3 win came courtesy of a brace from Adam Armstrong and one each from Ryan Kent and (in another cameo appearance) Joe Cole. All four scorers were on loan to the Sky Blues from Premier League clubs, Ryan (Liverpool), Adam (Newcastle United) and Joe (on a 35-day loan from Aston Villa).

Though City were 2-0 up at half time the second half advantage swung from end to end until Joe made it 4-2 just after the hour and a 90th minute penalty from the Tykes Josh Scowen made the score more respectable for Barnsley. Nearly all the match details are provided in the graphic below. The referee was Michael Bull and there were 300 fans from Yorkshire in the nearly 11,000 Ricoh crowd.
Of the eighteen Sky Blues in the matchday squad more than half (ten) later signed up with CCFPA. They are Reice Charles-Cook, Aaron Martin, Sam Ricketts, Chris Stokes, Romain Vincelot, Jim O’Brien, Lee Burge, Conor Thomas, Marcus Tudgay and Ryan Haynes. In addition the Tykes’ Simeon Jackson also became a Sky Blue and also joined this Association.

Sadly this promising first half of the season was not maintained in the new year. The defeated Tykes had the last laugh beating us by two clear goals in the return at Oakwell on 1st March and finishing in the playoffs and eventually winning them to gain promotion!

Thus, the Sky Blues who had once harboured serious promotion aspirations had to be content with an eighth place finish just shy of the playoffs.  Top of the tree this season were Wigan Athletic who were promoted along with runners up, a couple of points behind, Burton Albion and, as said earlier, Barnsley (after the playoffs). The relegated quartet was (in descending order) Bolton Wanderers, Blackpool, Colchester United and, at the very bottom, Crewe Alexandra.
