Madders in the Sky Blue

Still only 26 after his birthday today our young ‘Cov.Kid’ CCFPA member James Maddison has had another great year so far even without today’s celebrations as he continues to be a valued player with current club, Premier League Leicester City. In the last couple of years he has also made his senior international debut for England coming off the subs bench to join the 7-0 thrashing of Montenegro in the Euro 2020 qualifiers and is currently with the National World Cup squad in Qatar. We really hope he can overcome his knee injury to show his undoubted skills on the world stage at some point later in the competition.

CCFPA along with,we are sure, all Sky Blues fans hopes he has a wonderful day of celebration today! ‘Madders’ was born in Coventry on 23rd November 1966 and his home town club is still very much in his affections since leaving CCFC for new challenges in 2016.

Madders for England

The young former Sky Blue star continues to make stunning progress in his fledgling career having made his England U21 debut from the subs bench in a 2-0 win over Ukraine in a Euro U21 qualifier in November 2017 (surprisingly his first actual junior international cap at any level). As most Cov fans will be well aware ‘Madders’ came up through the ranks of the very successful CCFC Academy earning his first team squad number in 2013, debuting  in August 2014 and getting a professional contract in November 2014. By the time he left the Sky Blues at the end of January 2016 the then twenty year old had won many plaudits for his youthful skill and panache and in 31 appearances (twelve starts) he had scored four times for CCFC.

After Norwich City wrapped up a reported £3.5m five year deal with CCFC in February 2016, James immediately returned to the Sky Blues to the end of the 2015-16 season for a further eleven appearances (one goal). He was then loaned to Scottish outfit Aberdeen to continue his development for the first half of the 2016-17 season and scored twice in nineteen outings for the Scottish club before scoring on his Canaries’ debut in April 2017 (finishing up with four appearances that season).

James eventually contributed 16 goals in 53 appearances for the East Anglian club before signing for Premier League Leicester City for the start of the 2018-19 season for £22m. Madders quickly impressed for the Foxes at the top level and, though this season has not been as spectacular for the Foxes as the previous two,  he remains a significant player for them and, at the time of writing, has netted 52 times in his 185 appearances as well as making plenty of assists.

James joined CCFPA in September 2019 at the Ricoh on one of his regular returns to his home city and club. CCFPA vice chair Billy Bell is pictured (right) presenting him with his official CCFPA tie. James and fellow ‘Cov Kid’ CCFPA member Conor Thomas have also in the past run soccer summer camps for kids in the Coventry area to give something back to their local community.

Congratulations on your particularly special day today James! We look forward to seeing you at Association events as often as you are able to make it when things return back to much nearer ‘normal’! We know ‘Madders’ still has a big soft spot for his home town club!
