Matchday Memories: On This Day 2015 – See Mogga’s Men Crush Crawley On Season’s Last Day!

Manager Mowbray

On this day (3rd May) in 2015 the Sky Blues saw out their 2014-15 season with a much needed and morale boosting win in their League One campaign. Tony Mowbray had been ‘gaffer’ since the star of March after former player (and CCFPA member) Steven Pressley had been sacked on 22nd February.

Results had been patchy as City struggled to avoid the relegation spots. The six April games so far had seen only one win and two defeats including 3-1 to Crewe Alexandra last time out in the Sky Blues last home game of the season in their first season back at the Ricoh after the Sixfields’ exile.

Marcus in the Sky Blue

Today’s game at Crawley Town required a last minute goal from young James Maddison to give us a 2-1 win (and also send Crawley Town down). Only the 1,700 Sky Blues fans amongst the 5,724 crowd therefore went home happy as City took all three points and safety. City went one better than the 2-2 draw they had achieved agains the Sussex side in early October the previous year.

The win was probably deserved as, just before half-time, the Sky Blues squandered a brilliant goal chance. Following a nifty bit of footwork in the box from (now CCFPA member) Marcus Tudgay he was brought down and a penalty was awarded. City’s Nick Proschwitz produced an unconvincing spot kick which was saved, so sending the two sides down the tunnel at the break goalless.

James Maddison, Coventry City

Crawley quickly took the advantage, after only three minutes of the second half, when the home team’s Matthias Pogba powered in a short range header. Nailbitingly that’s how it stayed until 72 minutes had elapsed when (now CCFPA member) Marcus Tudgay steered a great header from a deep cross past the home team’s ‘keeper to equalise. As mentioned earlier Madders’ broke Crawley hearts with a ninetieth minute precise finish set up by recent CCFPA recruit Frank Nouble after he had robbed a defender!

CCFC 2014-15

Today’s result meant that Crawley Town finished 22nd in the table, two points adrift of safety, while the Sky Blues ended up five points clear of the drop, climbing one place to seventeenth, one rung higher than they finished a year previously. Notts County (21st), Leyton Orient (23rd) and bottom club Yeovil Town went down with Crawley.

Bristol City were Champions of League One eight points clear of also promoted MK Dons.
