‘Happy Birthday’ from CCFPA goes to our member, former Sky Blue striker Micky Quinn! A Liverpudlian, Micky was born on 2nd May 1962 and is therefore, we are sure, very much celebrating his very big 60th birthday today.  Micky has returned quite often to the Coventry area on speaking engagements as his presence always guarantees an uproarious and entertaining night out!  At one such event a while back CCFPA vice chairman Billy Bell took the opportunity to present Mick with his Association tie (pictured above right).

Usually featuring in such public appearances, among all the tales from the footballing and racing worlds, are plenty of memories of Mick’s ‘who ate all the pies’ years at all his clubs, and particularly at Highfield Road between 1992-95 where he became very affectionately known as ‘Sumo’.  Mick has always kept a continuing soft spot for the Sky Blues and has told us he keeps in regular touch with all our news via this web site and our Twitter site.

Micky Quinn on the rampage

Starting out as an apprentice with Derby County, Mick has always been able to find the net wherever he has played and built up a career league total of 229 goals scored in 524 appearances for nine clubs. He first demonstrated his net finding prowess at Wigan Athletic between 1979-82 when 19 goals came from his 69 outings. In 1982 Stockport County benefited from 39 goals in 63 appearances. Oldham Athletic got another great return on their investment with Mick hitting the net 34 times in eighty appearances. Portsmouth did even better from playing Mick as he contributed 54 goals from his 121 Pompey league appearances. Mick hit the heights with the ‘Toon Army’ idolising his outstanding 57 strikes in 110 games wearing the black and white of Newcastle United.

All this persuaded Sky Blue ‘gaffer’ and former player (and CCFPA member) Bobby Gould to bring Mick to Highfield Road in 1992. He started with a bang, very much hitting a ‘purple patch’ scoring seventeen Premier League goals in his first six months at the club, ten of which were in his first six games! Scoring in his first four CCFC games allowed him to begin a very exclusive club that stood unique in the Premier League for 22 years and has since been matched by less than a dozen players!  Mick scored 25 Sky Blue goals in his 68 first team appearances for us, many of them memorable ones, between 1992-95 also making another eight strangely scoreless appearances for Plymouth Argyle and Watford on loan from CCFC.

Mick eventually left the Sky Blues in 1995 when managed by CCFPA member ‘Big Ron’ Atkinson as he tried his luck with a stint of soccer overseas with PAOK Thessaloniki in Greece and there he managed one goal for them in his nine outings. On hanging up his boots Mick has developed a very successful career in another sport, horse racing. ‘The Mighty Quinn’ now concentrates on his life as a racehorse trainer running stables at Newmarket whilst also covering both horse racing and football on TalkSPORT as well as enjoying his evenings on the circuit as an after dinner speaker. Now the recent Covid-19 rectrictions have relaxed he has resumed many of his favourite past-times. We look forward to seeing him again back in Coventry soon!

We know you will have a great birthday today Mick! Come back and see us when you can.
