Matchday Memories: On This Day 1989 – See Sky Blue Speedie Serve Chips To Wow Wombles!

John Sillett CCFC gaffer

On this day (21st January) in 1989 the Sky Blues had former CCFC full back (and, until his very recent death, club Life President) John Sillett in the managerial chair. He chose a team to take on AFC Wimbledon at Highfield Road and 12,741 spectators watched a determined performance from the home team. The win, by the odd goal in three, ended the Dons run of five straight wins! In charge of the Wombles, of course, was former Sky Blue player and ‘gaffer’ (and ‘Cov Kid’) Bobby Gould (now a CCFPA member)! Former diminutive Sky Blue striker (and CCFPA member) Terry Gibson who was in the Wimbledon forward line was kept well in check by former team mate Trevor Peake as was the Crazy Gang’s future Sky Blue Dennis Wise.

City centre half Brian Kilcline opened the scoring after 25 minutes. He stepped up to take a penalty awarded when Wombles goalie Hans Segers brought down Sky Blues winger David Smith (now an Association member too) in the box. However, though Hans saved Brian’s initial effort ‘Killer’ followed up to score. The lead lasted only a couple of minutes, however, as the visitors’ John Scales soon netted an equaliser.

The Sky Blues winner came from the sometimes incendiary talent of David Speedie with another delightful ‘trademark’ chip from the edge of the box after 66 minutes which brought the house down – one of the finest goals seen at the ground in years! The 2-1 win meant the Sky Blues had done the double over the Dons having beaten them away by a Gary Bannister goal the previous September.

You can bet the ‘Gouldfather’ was not a happy man at this turn of results for his ‘Crazy Gang’ charges! You can see the goals again, thanks to CCFPA’s Dean Nelson by clicking on the image below:-

Sillett’s Sky Blues that day comprised:-

At the end of the season the Sky Blues finished in their second best ever position in the top tier taking seventh spot whilst Wimbledon occupied a mid table twelfth position. Arsenal took the Division One title this season albeit only on goal average from Liverpool! Local rivals Aston Villa missed relegation in seventeenth spot by only a point from Middlesbrough who went down with West Ham United and bottom club Newcastle United.
