Matchday Memories: On This Day 1982 – Sexton’s Sky Blues Nobble Notts Thanks To Gerry

Gerry with gaffer Dave Sexton

On this day (16th October) in 1982 the Sky Blues under Dave Sexton took on Notts County in a home Division One game and came out on top with the only goal of the game, a delightful chip scored by Gerry Francis in the 74th minute over future City keeper Raddy Avramovic.

Future Sky Blues F.A.Cup winning giant of a captain Brian ‘Killer’ Kilcline (now a CCFPA member) was also the Magpies’ centre half that day.

The Magpies must have been disappointed not to have extend a winning run after smashing Aston Villa 4-1 in their last game. Gerry inspired the City’s win having made a great return from a head injury caused when he accidentally fell off his garage roof and therefore wore a protective plaster.

Sadly, the Sky Blues’ win was watched by only 8,314 hardy souls at a windy Highfield Road.

The ref has a word with Gerry as Les Sealey looks on

Sexton’s Sky Blues that day (CCFPA members underlined) were:-

The late Les Sealey, Danny Thomas, Brian ‘Harry’ Roberts, Ian Butterworth, Paul Dyson, Gary Gillespie, Steve Jacobs, Gerry Francis, Jim Melrose, Garry Thompson and Steve Hunt.

County’s side turned out as follows:-

Raddy Avramovic, Tristan Benjamin (sub. Aki Lahtinen), Nigel Worthington, David Hunt, Brian Kilcline, Pedro Richards, John Chiedozie, Trevor Christie, Iain McCulloch, David Clarke and Gordon Mair     Referee:- C.Downey

Unfortunately for the Sky Blues, County ran rampant in the return at Meadow Lane, Nottingham at the end of February 1983 slamming the Sky Blues 5-1 with Gary Gillespie getting our consolation.

The Sky Blues (just) survived their Division One season in nineteenth spot a point and a place above the relegation spots (occupied by Manchester City, Swansea Town and Brighton).

Notts. County were safe in fifteenth on 52 points four points clear of City. Liverpool took the title by a massive eleven points from runners up Watford.

Thanks to CCFPA’s Dean Nelson for sourcing the photos.
