Bright Enobakhare at Nuneaton

Two days ago the Sky Blues played their usual pre-season game at near neighbours National League Nuneaton Borough. The fixture was orginally seen by some as a clash of the respective club’s first teams. However, CCFC later made it clear they would be fielding a Coventry City XI mostly filled out with Development squad youngsters and a couple of trialists , effectively a Sky Blues Under 23 side. They needn’t have worried as the Sky Blues went nap running out comfortable 5-0 winners with goals from Josh Reid (34mins) and Jack Burrows (40) to give City a 2-0 half-time lead. Then the comprehensive win was completed with strikes from Jay McGrath (49 mins) and a quick fire brace from Fabio Tavares (62:65). Newly returned to the club Bright Enobakhare made a couple of the Sky Blues goals.

In the Borough team facing the City youngsters was a couple of popular former Sky Blue veterans (both of whom are now CCFPA members and have played for the Sky Blue Legends XI for charity)! Former Sky Blue skipper Carl Baker captained the Borough side and William Edjenguélé  was at the heart of their defence. Both gave way during the second half to substitutes which both sides used extensively.

William in the Sky Blue

Frenchman William, now son in law to CCFC Legend (and fellow Association member) Steve Ogrizovic, played the 2012–13 season with the Sky Blues signing from Greek side Panetolikos.William had started early with home town junior club CFF Paris in 1993 eventually (2005) graduating to the reserves of Le Mans UC72. He got his first sustained period of senior football with Swiss Super League side Neuchatel Xamax before his first Greek adventure. Before he left for the ill fated Bury club he had scored one goal in his 40 Sky Blue appearances. Last season he was with Wealdstone and in between Gigg Lane and the London club had spells back at Panetolikos (January 2014) then their Super League club Veria (July 2015) before three seasons (2016-19) with Scottish club Dundee United (plus a brief loan spell at Falkirk).

Bakes in the Sky Blue

Carl is currently on his second spell with the Borough having played games for Brackley Town in between in 2019. He joined Nuneaton initially after his second short gameless spell with the Sky Blues from March-May 2018 curtailed by a niggling injury which had also put paid to his footballing expedition to the new Indian Super League with ATK (Kolcata) from September 2017. Carl cut his teeth in the Liverpool youth system before time with Southport (2003), Morecambe (2007) and Stockport County (2010). He signed for the Sky Blues for the first time in January 2010 for reportedly £300k and ‘Bakes’ quickly made himself a crowd favourite and became club ‘skipper’. By the time he was released in September 2014 he had clocked up 28 goals in 182 appearances in three Championship and two League One seasons for the Sky Blues. MK Dons picked him up from City and he spent two season there helping them get promoted to the Championship. A further two seasons with Portsmouth sa them also aided by Bakes to promotion – this time to League One before Carl answered the call to try his luck in India.
