Members News: Bakes Backs The Borough Again
CCFPA member and former Sky Blues captain Carl Baker, it has just been confirmed will extend his time at current non-league club, the Sky Blues close neighbours, Nuneaton Borough.
Boro’s ‘gaffer’ Jimmy Ginnelly also told the website he was “delighted for all you Boro supporters and the team to re-sign our skipper Carl Baker. It’ll be like having a new signing as Bakes was injured almost all of last season with a niggling calf injury. His skill is something we all love to see and he’s a top class skipper in and around the dressing rooms. I’m looking to tap into all his experience on the pitch and in the dressing rooms. Leroy, Luke and Ravi will benefit from his crosses and balls into the oppositions box and Bakes wants to finish his career with a promotion so hopefully this is the year for him, and all of us collectively.”
Carl spent just over four and a half years with the Sky Blues in his first spell here making 182 appearances in all competitions and scoring 28 goals, having previously played for both Southport and Morecambe and joined CCFC from Stockport in January 2010. He moved from the Ricoh to MK Dons in September 2014 and contributed 15 goals in his 72 appearances for the Dons, helping them to promotion before moving to Portsmouth for 2016-17 where he was a team-mate of another popular former Sky Blue skipper (& fellow CCFPA member) Michael Doyle (and another promotion was achieved). Carl originally joined Nuneaton for the 2018-19 season after his second short term spell with CCFC from March 2018 was still-born when a recurrent injury received whilst training for a season with Indian SL side ATK (Atletico de Kolkata) prevented any appearances there or for the Sky Blues. On leaving the Borough in January 2019 Bakes joined Brackley Town for a time before returning to the Borough last season.
Carl became one of our most popular and committed players and has always been a huge supporter of CCFPA, for example, entering a team and playing in more than one Golf Day appearing in the Sky Blues Legends XI for charity and being an Association and club guest at Sky Blues games both at the Ricoh and St Andrews. He is fondly remembered by all Sky Blues fans for his skill on the ball and wholehearted commitment to the Sky Blues team, Club and community.
