It has just been announced that well travelled and popular former Sky Blue midfielder Romain Vincelot has been appointed  as the new First Team Fitness Coach at Stevenage Football Club where he retired from playing at the end of last season. According to STFC’s website Romain joins Alex Revell’s backroom staff “with a depth of experience spanning his 17-years as a player and now moves to a new career in the game as he completes a BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science Degree with Manchester Metropolitan University“. His first match in the dugout will take place on Saturday 10th July 2021 for Stevenage’s pre-season fixture at Hitchin Town.

It took him six months from his release to find a new home in England with League Two Dagenham & Redbridge in January 2012. He saw them promoted in his first of two seasons there and improved his marksmanship sufficiently (notching 13 goals in his 61 appearances) to attract newly promoted Championship side Brighton & Hove Albion. Signing up for the south coast club for £100k his only goal for the Seagulls in twenty appearances was against the Sky Blues in a 2-1 win in Sussex. Getting no first team exposure in the 2012–13 season, Romain was loaned out to League Two Gillingham on loan scoring once in 11 matches at Priestfield. Leaving Falmer when his contract was up Romain fixed up an initially short term tenure with League One Leyton Orient in January 2013. Eventually staying another two seasons in London Romain clocked up only four short of a cantury of appearances for the Orient netting five times.

Manager Mowbray

His success there prompted Coventry City, then in League One to fork out an undisclosed fee for the midfielder getting him to sign a two-year contract on 8 July 2015. Sadly, despite being a regular and a tenacious midfielder described by some as ‘a warrior’, he was inexplicably let go after just one Sky Blues season where he was virtually ever present playing 46 times and scoring four Sky Blue goals! He will be remembered as an important part of a Tony Mowbray team which pulled off some outstanding results including a magnificent 4-0 win at Millwall and 5-0 win at Crewe Alexandra in a sensational first half of the campaign that promised a promotion push but, disappointingly, fell flat after Christmas. Other Mowbray Men in that team which sparkled for a time were up front Adam Armstrong, Jacob Murphy and Ryan Kent and around and behind them Reda Johnson, Joe Cole, James Maddison, Ruben Lameiras and John Fleck.

Romain’s next port of call was City’s L1 rivals Bradford City where, from July 2016, he signed a two-year contract and became their captain. In two full seasons in Yorkshire Romain netted seven goals in 94 appearances before moving to League Two Crawley Town in July 2018 where he played only 15 times. However, despite the two year deal, in January 2019 he was on the move again back up the ladder to join League One Shrewsbury Town managed by his former Sky Blues’ team mate (and CCFPA member) Sam Ricketts. Bothered by a hip injury which required innovative resurfacing surgery Romain managed only seven games for the Shrews before being released in June 2020.

Romain Vincelot, Coventry City

It took only a month before Stevenage came in for him to play for them in League Two football last season and Romain finished with a total of 31 appearances for the Boro before now moving into the management team at the Boro’ to produce decent career totals of 32 goals in 452 games.

Boro’s ‘gaffer’ Revell told their website, “We are delighted to announce that Romain is joining our management team as First Team Fitness Coach. He has been the ultimate professional in his football career. His work ethic, high standards, commitment and passion are all attributes we value and promote at this Club. He will be an integral part of our staff as we continue to build on what we achieved last season. He is very focused on his next steps and, as in his football career, he will strive to be the best and work relentlessly until he achieves that goal”.

The Association wishes Romain all the best in his new role and would love to see him sign up for this Association in the near future.
