Matchday Memories: On This Day 1981 – Milne’s Men Make One More Indonesian Win In Jakarta
On this day (8th June) in 1981 the Sky Blues were on their Indonesian leg of a South East Asian Tour, having earlier visited Thailand where they drew 2-2 with a national eleven, beaten a Selangor side 1-0 in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur and on the last day of May beaten a South Korean side (Hallelujah) 4-3 in Hong Kong.
In Indonesia four days previously the Sky Blues had defeated a national junior side (Indonesia M.G.) 4-1 in Surabaya, then taken on a State representative side in Surabaya and triumphed 7-1 a couple of days before. Today’s match was in the Indonesian capital Jakarta and the local eleven were beaten by three clear goals. We have no other information to hand at this time.
However, Gordon Milne’s touring party in 1980-81 comprised:-
Gary Bannister, Andy Blair, Jim Blyth, Peter Bodak, Mick Coop, Gerry Daly, Paul Dyson, Tom English, Mick Ferguson, Gary Gillespie, Ray Gooding, Mark Hateley, Steve Hunt, Brian Roberts, the late Les Sealey, Danny Thomas, Garry Thompson and Steve Whitton.
(Those who later went on to join CCFPA are underlined)
Just one more tour match remained for the Sky Blue party in a couple of days time when they took on another Indonesian side, Pardedetex and won again – see a later post on that anniversary for more details.
