Benno guards his goal

The Cov Walking Footballers arrive

Its just a week ago since CCFPA committee member Dave Bennett took advantage of the relaxation of COVID restrictions to take to the football field again.  It wasn’t as a goalscoring wide man however that he appeared at Shrewsbury Town‘s ground but this time between the sticks!

‘Benno’ pulled on the goalkeeping gloves to help out the Sky Blue in The Community ‘Walking Football’ Over 50 representative team who had travelled to Shropshire to take part in a round robin of matches with other similar teams from the area.

Sadly, the SBiTC’s ‘keeper got injured in the first couple of minutes so Dave, who is now part of the set up run by fellow CCFPA member and former Sky Blue, CCFC’s Head of Community, Dave Busst, deputised!

Benno in the Sky Blue

Now into his sixties himself SBiTC’s rookie goalie  didn’t do too badly as Dave’s Coventry Sky Blues won one of their four games, lost one and drew the other two! Unkind commentators might have said that ‘Benno’ put to good use his outfield ‘diving’ skills in his new role between the posts! – he certainly saved the day!

‘Benno’ sent some photos of the day, some of which we reproduce here.

As Dave says, “Its great to see the players performing considering what we have all gone through in the last year with COVID, lockdown and many families having members affected by the pandemic, some losing loved ones – I’m glad to help and give something back to the community”
