Gordon the Gaffer

On this day (15th April) in 2000 the Sky Blues under Gordon Strachan were nearing the end of their penultimate season in the top flight. Only four more games remained after today’s enconter at Highfield Road against fellow mid-tablers Middlesbrough. The Sky Blues were coming off three successive Premier League defeats so the Sky Blues fans in the 19,430 crowd were looking for a positive response! Their opponents were in good form coming off the back of only one defeat in the last seven games and back in February they had beaten us 2-0 on Teesside.

In the end the Sky Blues got their win and the corresponding points thanks a goal in each half but it was not easy. The battle between City’s midfielder (and now CCFPA member) John Eustace and Boro’s Paul Ince was about the only thing to liven up a dire first half!

Robbie in Sky Blue action

The Sky Blues iconic and livewire young Irish forward Robbie Keane had a key role in both of our goals. Just after the half hour mark, after a neat one-two, he fired in a shot which ricocheted off the Middlesbro ‘keeper and then Ince into the net to give the Sky Blues a half-time lead. Then, a minute after the hour mark he produced a vintage strike capitalising on Noel Whelan‘s through ball and finished off with a trademark somersault.

Only after 2-0 down did the north easterners really start to put their game together and, after 64 minutes, they were offered a lifeline with the award of a penalty kick. Unfortunately John Eustace committed a rash foul on rampaging Andy Campbell in the box and this allowed Christian Ziege to net the resultant spot kick. However, City were able to hold on for the final third of the game and the welcome points were theirs!

Manchester United walked away with the Premier League title finishing eighteen points clear of runners up Arsenal and well more than double (91) the 44 points won by the Sky Blues! In descending order the relegated trio of clubs were Wimbledon, Sheffield Wednesday and (bottom) Watford (whom the Sky Blues contrived to lose 1-0 to on the season’s last day)!
