Matchday Memories: On This Day 1991 – See Chelsea’s Blues Bested By Butcher’s Boys

On this April Fool’s Day in 1991 the Sky Blues under player-manager Terry Butcher took on Chelsea at Highfield Road in front of 14,279 spectators. This was the last season at CCFC for our giant of a centre forward Cyrille Regis‘ (too recently taken from the footballing world for good) and many fans were unhappy at what seemed a premature departure from the club. Robert Rosario, signed to take Cyrille’s place on his departure on a free at the end of the season certainly had big football boots to fill! The injury received in City’s last game by the influential Stewart Robson suggested an early return to West Ham might be on the cards.

In a disappointing game on a blustery day, which had the look of a 0-0 bore draw all over it, the points were finally settled in the Sky Blues favour when, after a solo run, (now CCFPA member) Micky Gynn beat the Pensioners’ ‘keeper Dave Beasant with a blistering 20 yard low drive. The goal and 1-0 victory was enough to lift the Sky Blues out of the relegation zone

Bobby Campbell‘s Blues took the field as follows:-

Kerry’s dad Mike Dixon used to be a Coventry City player in the early 1960s and Dennis Wise offered CCFC an influential cameo in the second half of the 2005-06 season.

The Sky Blues reasonable home record of ten wins ensured Division One survival for another season; they finished 16th, ten points clear of the relegation spots. Sunderland and bottom club Derby County were the fall guys. Chelsea finished mid table on 11th.  Even though they had one point deducted Arsenal finished Division One champions seven points clear of runners up Liverpool.
