Matchday Memories: On This Day 1993 – Gynn’s Goal Gives Sky Blue Success & Wednesday Woe

Sky Blue Micky Gynn

On this day (3rd March) in 1993 the Sky Blues saw off Sheffield Wednesday in a Division One match at Highfield Road in front of 13,192 fans. By winning by the only goal the Sky Blues completed ‘the double’ over the Owls, managed by Trevor Francis, having beaten them at Hillsborough 2-1 in early September with goals from Peter Ndlovu and (now CCFPA member) Lee Hurst.

Despite the fact the Owls were still in both Cups (F.A. and League) and were unbeaten in the last sixteen games, the Sky Blues prevailed in an ‘average’ game 1-0, the strike coming a minute from half-time from 1987 F.A.Cup winning hero Micky Gynn. The goal was made by John Williams after a diagonal run by ‘the Flying Postman’! The two men made up a quarter of the eight team members later to sign up for the Association (underlined below). The Owl’s star Chris Waddle was kept very quiet by City’s Stuart Robson.

The Sky Blues finished in a relatively (for them) comfortable 15th position five places and three points above the drop zone (which contained Crystal Palace, Middlesbrough and the Forest at the foot of the table). Sheffield Wednesday finished in a creditable 7th position in the Premier League. Manchester United took the title by ten points from the Villa.
