Blast From The Past: On This Day 1975 – CCFC Create Canaries 7th Successive 3rd Round Cup Calamity

On this day (4th January) in 1975 the Sky Blues, under gaffer Gordon Milne, had drawn old foes Norwich City in the F.A.Cup Round.

The omens were good as Highfield Road was something of a bogey ground for the Canaries and they had gone out of the cup at this stage for the last six seasons.

CCFC made it seven successive defeats winning by two clear goals in front of 19,265 fans.

In truth the Sky Blues deserved a bigger margin of victory that the two goals scored (both in the first period) by Brian Alderson (18 minutes) and our rugged centre-half Larry Lloyd six minutes before the break.

Brian scored his first Sky Blue goal since September with a first-timer. Larry’s freak 50 yard effort sails over Norwich goalie Kevin Keelan without bouncing!

A strong City defence managed to keep the much vaunted Canaries forward pairing of Ted McDougall and Phil Boyer very quiet and the passage to Round 4 was secured pretty easily.

Milne’s men that day lined up as follows (CCFPA members underlined):-

Neil Ramsbottom, Graham Oakey, Chris Cattlin, John Craven*, Larry Lloyd, Alan Dugdale, Willie Carr, Brian Alderson* (sub. Jimmy Holmes), Colin Stein, David Cross and Tommy Hutchison

Apart from John and Brian, who both died at a tragically early age, all members of this team (and their gaffer) later went on to join this Association.

City drew Arsenal in the 4th Round and, after a 1-1 draw at Highfield Road, went out at Highbury by three clear goals at the end of January. In the League the Sky Blues had a reasonably comfortable finish in 14th spot in 1974-75.
