Peter Denton arrives

Peter Denton at Jimmy Hill’s Memorial Service at Coventry Cathedral last February

The Association was very sorry to hear that our member, former Sky Blue winger Peter Denton passed away yesterday morning after, we are told, a sudden worsening of a heart condition. Our sincere condolences got to Peter’s family and friends on their loss.

Briefly, for the record, the late Jimmy Hill brought the young right winger to Highfield Road in time for the start of the 1962-63 season from non-league Gorleston Town (his home town club) where he had just turned professional. Peter made his Sky Blue Division 2 debut in a 3-1 home win against Ipswich Town on November 13th 1965 but waited to score his sole goal for us in another 3-1 home victory, this time against Cardiff City at the end of March 1966.

In all Peter turned out only 11 times for CCFC as he was in competition for the no.7 slot with the great Ronnie Rees (also a CCFPA member). In January 1968 Peter moved to Luton Town but only played a further hanfdul of games before dropping to the non-league scene with the likes of Canterbury City and Margate before starting coaching at both Kenilworth Road, Luton and with Vauxhall Motors FC up to the mid-1990s.

A fuller obituary/ appreciation of Peter’s life and career will appear on this site in due course and when we hear any details of funeral arrangements we will pass them on. Peter was well liked amongst his former colleagues and always made an effort to come back to the Ricoh for Legends Day reunions.
