Farewell ‘Gibbo’! The Association is very sorry to hear that nineteen sixties Sky Blues hero Ian Gibson passed away earlier today at the age of 73. Ian was last at the Ricoh as CCFPA’s special guest at a Saturday home game against Scunthorpe United in November 2012 and colleague Ernie Machin‘s tribute game the previous month.

Starting his career at Accrington Stanley Ian then moved to Bradford Park Avenue before moving on to Teesside. Signed from Middlesbrough for a then club record fee of £57500 in 1966 the mercurial inside forward was a key member of the Jimmy Hill CCFC side who won promotion to Division 1 and then the early Noel Cantwell sides that consolidated our place in the top Division. From 1966-70 Ian scored 15 times (often crucial goals) in 104 first team appearances before moving on to Cardiff City an eventually finishing his first class career with Bournemouth.

He will be remembered by Sky Blues fans at both those visits to the Ricoh as still a lively and dapper man with a wicked Scottish sense of humour and a sharp appreciation of the current game, full of anecdotes about his time with the club. He was given the sort of rousing reception by the half-time crowd (and later by Sky Blue fans on stage of Lady Gs in the G-Casino after the game) as he got during his playing days as he was an irrepressible fans favourite at Highfield Road.

He will be greatly missed and all at the Association send Ian’s family and friends our sincere condolences.

We will pass on any details we receive of funeral arrangements and a full appreciation of Gibbo’s career by CCFPA chairman and official club historian Jim Brown will appear on this site in due course.
