Walking Football at St Finbarrs

Walking Football at St Finbarrs last Thursday

Walking Football is still a relatively new health initiative designed for the over 50s. It is expanding across the country and had one of its first bases in Coventry and District, initially at St. Finbarr’s Sports & Social Club (303 Holbrooks Lane CV6 4DG) every Thursday and additionally more recently at Bedworth Town’s ground, the Bedworth Oval on Monday mornings.

Locally, each ‘Walking Football’ event is organised by  Sky Blue in the Community (SBiTC)  supremo, former Sky Blue defender and CCFPA member David Busst along with SBiTC’s Hiedi Sloan. The sessions which are supported by, amongst others, CCFPA, Cov Support News Service and CCFC Diamond Club take place from 10:30am until noon at a cost of £3 which includes refreshments.  You can find out more by contacting the Sky Blues in the Community Team by Email: sbitc@ccfc.co.uk , or Telephone: 02476 786 314, or Text: 07813 455 531.

SBiTC Walking Football A5 1pp (print)If you’re over 50 years old and would like to get involved you can’t do better than join us in these popular sessions (see our reports on the fun to be had at previous sessions in earlier news items)! New participants join every week so why not join the the mix of Sky Blue fans, Association committee members, CCFPA Associate Members, and our full members, including some of our most well respected former players like Dietmar Bruck, Ian Goodwin and Dave Bennett? The sessions, designed for over 50s who wish to exercise gently and enjoyably through football in the company of friends try to ensure that all play is at kept at walking pace and running is penalised!

CCFPA committee member Frank Pritchard reports that at last Thursday’s session at St.Finbarr’s (pictured above) they had the best attendance yet with 35 players on the pitch. This enabled the organisers to field five teams in a round robin tournament for the first time! According to Frank the games were very competitive and showed commitment from the whole group including the several ‘first-timers’ that tried it out and found it much to their liking!

Frank and Dave send their thanks to all those who turned up whether ‘old legs’/’old lags’ or newcomers. Please note that because of the May Bank Holiday there will be NO session at the Bedworth Oval (Bedworth FC’s ground) on Monday next but ‘Walking Football’ will resume at St Finbarr’s next Thursday (7th May) and Bedworth Oval a week on Monday (11th May).
