‘Benno’ Slows Down to Enjoy Walking Football

Another of the regular sessions of ‘Walking Football‘, designed for over 50s who wish to exercise gently and enjoyably through football in the company of some of their CCFC heroes took place yesterday (Thursday) lunchtime. CCFPA Committee Member Frank Pritchard sent in this report and photos (though we suspect the one with the exercise bike from 1987 is effectively an heirloom!:-

“On a bitterly cold, crisp morning where the temperature was only just above freezing) 23 hardy individuals invluding a number of CCFP Former Players (FPs) warmed-up for another intense session of ‘Walking Football’.

As well as most of the regulars I’m pleased to say we were joined by several newcomers, including a big supporter of CCFPA Ken Sharples (Holbrook Motors) who turned out to be one of the stars of the session. He also confirmed he’d be entering at least one team for the Association’s Golf Day (Thurs.4th June Stoneleigh Deer Park GC) but possibly two! Thanks for your continued support Ken*.

We were well supported from the sidelines by  Bill Tedds (still recovering from a minor operation) and ‘Penalty King’ Ronnie Farmer (both CCFPA members). Ron says he’s still waiting for ‘Brucky’ (fellow Association colleague Dietmar Bruck) to supply him with some new boots!

Veteran FP Ken Brown not only declared himself fit but also scored a couple of goals and also in the thick of the action was John Corden (who didn’t take any prisoners). With fitness levels improving week on week and more movement off-the-ball there were a couple of high scoring games.

Also we were most encouraged to be joined and supported by 1987 FA Cup Winner and  goal scoring ‘Hero’ Dave Bennett (who will not like reminding actually qualifies to play but has promised to join us more regularly in the near future). He brought along the photo from his footballing past in 1987 -we presume- to show the fitness levels he hopes to regain through ‘Walking Football! Fellow CCFPA committee member Bob Eales also came along to give us his support to Sky Blues in the Community  (SBiTC)  and their ‘Walking Football’ initiative.

SBiTC Walking Football A5 1pp (print) Association Vice Chairman Billy Bell once again put in a good shift, even though he does have a habit of ‘breaking into a run’!  CCFPA Associate member, Coventry Telegraph’s Mike Malyon returned following a heavy cold but unfortunately Steve Tweed from Birmingham fell awkwardly injuring his wrist, which unfortunately required a visit to A & E. We all wish him a speedy recovery”.

Former Sky Blue defender and CCFPA member SBiTC’s David Busst along with Hiedi Sloan organises ‘Walking Football’ at St Finbarr’s every Thursday from 10:30am until noon at a cost of £3 which includes refreshments. Dave comes to most sessions but wasn’t able to be there due to a commitment clash yesterday. If you’re over 50 years old and would like to get involved why not join the CCFPA crowd next and every Thursday!?

Just turn up at St. Finbarr’s Sports & Social Club (303 Holbrooks Lane CV6 4DG) any Thursday at 10:30 am. You can also find out more by contacting the Sky Blues in the Community Team by Email: sbitc@ccfc.co.uk , or Telephone: 02476 786 314, or Text: 07813 455 531.

*If you would like to get fit by entering a team to play golf with some of our Sky Blue Legends at Stoneleigh Deer Park GC on Thursday June 4th 2015 for more information please contact Frank Pritchard  on 07815 899224 or frank.pritchard1@ntlworld.com
