Cyrus (3rd left) celebrates with Irish scorer Robbie Brady

Coventry kid, CCFPA member and former Sky Blue defender Cyrus Christie made a winning start to his full international career last night (18/11/2014).  Republic of Ireland boss Martin O’Neill gave Cyrus his first full 90 minutes at right back with a somewhat experimental ROI side in Dublin last night as they ran out 4-1 winners against Jurgen Klinsmann’s U.S.A. side. O’Neill said Cyrus had an ‘outstanding’ introduction to international football.

He is reported by the Coventry Telegraph to have told the FAI: “I think it went really well tonight and there were some great performances from the lads and Shay (Given) pulled off some fantastic saves. “We began to control things in midfield and that allowed me to get forward. I work on getting forward and my crossing at Derby and it’s starting to pay off. The whole experience has been great. Obviously I knew a few of the lads already and that made things easier. Everyone gets along and that made it easier. I hadn’t even been to an international game before this week and it’s a fantastic achievement for me, and a dream to come true – it’s something I dreamed about as a kid. To pull on the Ireland jersey was fantastic. I’m just happy that I managed to play well. To get a win on your debut was a great feeling, it went according to plan.”

Another former Sky Blue and Cyrus’ Derby County colleague (and fellow CCFPA member) Richard Keogh was rested for this fixture but another debutante (until substituted later in the 2nd half) was David McGoldrick who had a recent loan spell at the Ricoh but is now with Ipswich Town. An impressive start for Cyrus!
