‘Harry’ & Kirk chat before the game

Kirk Stephens, CCFPA President and the Association’s ‘special guest’ at CCFC’s F.A.Cup 1st round fixture at the Ricoh on Sunday last sadly saw a Sky Blue shocker. The Sky Blues were dumped out of the Cup by non league Worcester City in what Sky Blue gaffer (and CCFPA member) Steven Pressley admitted was an embarrassing and humiliating performance by his team. If truth be told Worcester were the better team and thoroughly deserved their win with their League One opponents outfought and suffering lapses in skill, concentration and motivation not helped by goalkeeper Lee Burge conceding a first half penalty, having been sent off red carded for a petulant retaliation on a Worcester player and captain Reda Johnson fluffing  his own penalty opportunity which would have equalised (though he did get the team’s second half consolation goal).

As he toured the Ricoh lounges and corporate areas (above right) with club host and fellow CCFPA member Brian ‘Harry’ Roberts entertaining fans before the game neither Kirk nor Harry could have anticipated the Sky Blues succumbing to such a first round banana skin in such a way.  Kirk’s commentary and analysis for BBC CWR during the game reflected the fans disillusionment and dismay at the team’s performance overall.

On the stage of Lady G’s (above) in the Ricoh’s G-Casino with an appreciative audience of Sky Blue fans, Kirk and CCFPA Vice Chair Billy Bell did their best to lighten the atmosphere after a dark day for the Sky Blues. As CCFPA Chairman (and CCFC official club historian) Jim Brown reminds us the Worcester debacle was the CCFC’s first F.A.Cup home defeat to a non-league club since the notorious day in 1961-62 when the Bantam’s 2-1 home defeat to Kings Lynn heralded CCFPA member Jimmy Hill‘s arrival as a new broom manager at Highfield Road and the birth of the ‘Sky Blue Revolution’ itself.

We can only hope that Steven Pressley’s current Sky Blues can get back on track with a JPT cup win against Plymouth Argyle at the Ricoh on Wednesday and that the presence of our special guest for the evening (former club captain Carl Baker) will help to motivate and galvanise his former colleagues and that Carl will witness a vastly improved performance from the team. (Thanks to CCFPA’s Frank Pritchard for the photos).
