Matchday Memories: Quite Lucky Sky Blue 13th Today Tho’ No Away Win Yet!
The number 13 is supposed to have unlucky associations, especially Friday 13th. Four season’s ago the Sky Blues had played their Legends Day fixture the previous day on Saturday (the 12th). Three seasons ago the Championship 1-1 draw with Hull City was also on Saturday 11th. In 2021 we originally had a planned fixture away at Rotherham United (and their captain CCFPA member Richard Wood) on this day. Sadly, that game became a victim of a COVID outbreak at the Millers’ club.
However, on this day in history (13th March) Coventry City FC seemed to have been blessed with reasonably good luck, at least as far as non losing results are concerned. On the stats a draw would have been on the cards for the Sky Blues last time but an away win on this day would have achieved a lonely record! Now we will have to wait for yet another season to test the trend!
As far as the stats are concerned, as far as this site’s editor Mike Young can tell, since CCFC entered the Football League in 1919-20 they have played 21 league fixtures (and one F.A.Cup game) on this date and only lost four. Strangely the fixture computer (or whatever preceded it) managed to ensure sixteen out of the 21 games (76%) were in Coventry!
Remarkably, of the five games played away from home only ONE resulted in defeat (the rest were drawn). Only three out of the sixteen home games to date were defeats. Most recently, since our Division Two days in 1964-65, we have lost only one of thirteen fixtures to date.
Both home and away, for gamblers, eleven out of the 21 games (over half) turned out as draws and a surprisingly small total of six wins (all at home) were achieved in the 21 games played. Can Coventry City stattos come up with another date with such as skewed set of results?
Venue | P | W | D | L | F | A |
Home | 16 | 6 | 7 | 3 | 27- | 23 |
Away | 5 | 0 | 4 | 1 | 4- | 6 |
Total | 21 | 16 | 11 | 4 | 31- | 29 |
Amazingly nearly all of these results are all against different teams (except we have played both Luton Town and Arsenal twice on this day).
Look out in later posts today for more detailed coverage of one or two of the club’s victories on this day! For reference the full stats are depicted below:-
